Black Algae will show up on pool surfaces as black rough spots. When you scratch a patch it should come off as a dark green colour.
Cloudy water comes in varying degrees from dull looking water to not being able to see the first step on the ladder which would be milky white.
“Moss like” algae growing on swimming pool walls and surfaces. Usually found on the shaded areas of the pool.
Total algae bloom. Entire pool is green and cloudy. First signs of this algae is cloudy water then it turns green. Can happen “overnight” or after a heavy rain storm.
Heavy Metal Stain - Iron, Copper or Manganese
These metal stains are the result of heavy metals coming out of solution in the swimming pool. There will be a smooth discolouration on the pool surface. The colours will vary depending on which metal they are from. The colours are mainly green, blue, grey, rust, purple and black. Though the colours are different the treatment is the same.
Light brown colour often mistaken for filter sand. Brushes away very easily into a cloud but will come back.
The calcium stains will create a rough surface on swimming pool surfaces and equipment. The colour is usually yellow but can also absorb other colours from the swimming pool environment. (Grey – dirt, green – algae or copper, blue- copper, black – copper or iron, purple – manganese). Though the colours may be different the treatment is the same.
